Level 4 HLTA Course Overview
The Level 4 Certificate for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA) is an OFQUAL accredited online TA certificate, specifically designed for teaching assistants who wish to progress to HLTA status. This course serves as a progressive pathway towards greater teaching assistance capacity within the school or Further Education (FE) sector. It aims at training for career progression which is helpful especially for candidates with prior qualifications in Supporting Teaching and Learning or those who have done the Support Work in Schools course.
The aim of the training is to add the learners’ competencies, knowledge, and skills to effectively address the challenges in the workplace. The curriculum focuses on the support of small groups and amplifies the knowledge an instructor may provide to individuals with different learning abilities. This equips teaching assistants with advanced knowledge to navigate learning environments more effectively.
Can I acquire HLTA status after the course is completed?
The course meets the higher level teaching standards, meaning that it equips learners with the knowledge necessary to succeed in the assessment. However, the course does not grant this status. For one to gain HLTA qualification, they need to pass the assessment and this course is specifically aimed at preparing them for it. There are other preceding requirements too like documented classroom hours as a teaching assistant and a nationally endorsed English/literacy and math/numeracy qualifications at level 2 or higher. The National Assessment Partnership offers in depth information on the processes involved in the assessment. Also, this Level 4 HLTA course is offered online so that learners can pace their study with self guided resources while getting ready for the assessment.
What do HLTA Standards encompass?
Teaching assistants aspiring for this course accreditation must meet the defined benchmarks within the professional standards. The total number of standards which are 33, are grouped into three main categories as follows:
Standards 1-7, Professional Qualities: These standards outline the professional commitment, actions, and characteristics Higher Level Teaching Assistants are expected to show.
Standards 8-16, Professional knowledge and understanding: These standards specify competencies and professional knowledge that higher-level teaching assistants should have to work effectively and collaborate with the teachers as a member of the professional learning support team.
Standards 17-33, Professional Skills: These standards detail the requirements of preparing, overseeing, managing, and assessing instruction within established guidelines and management as determined in consultation with the authorised teacher and in compliance with guidelines under decisions made by the head teacher of the school.
If you’re prepared to meet the expectations and advance in your support career, take note of the HLTA training course offered by Bright Pathway and start your journey working toward being certified as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.

Yes, real-school setting observation/witness is mandatory. The observation is usually carried out by an expert witness, generally a class teacher, or a qualified assessor and then produces the witness
There is only a single witness statement that is to be filled by your workplace supervisor regarding all of the relevant units/modules of the course that requires the witness testimony. Coordinate with your mentor to agree on the date and time for the expert witness to observe your activities. It is flexible in terms of planning the activities, which adapts to your time schedule.
A Witness Testimony is considered as “supporting evidence” as it can be used as a confirmation of the work of the learner’s workplace activities, through a statement from a qualified person. This statement confirms the ability of learners in defined skills or tasks, particularly those challenging to demonstrate by paper evidence. It is necessary to mention that in addition to the witness testimony, learners have to provide a reflective account.
A Reflective Account is a document that describes an activity in detail of learners as corroborated by their workplace supervisor. This includes analysis of successes and failures, reflection and learning, as well as plans for improvement.
This qualification can be pursue by all school teachers, teaching in primary, secondary, or special education. Just make sure the students you support are in Key Stage 1 and older than five.
Certainly, simulation is not permitted for this qualification, and observation must take place in a school environment while working with children.
