The Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (England) is an Ofqual regulated qualification, aimed at learners who want to gain the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to work effectively with children and young people in a residential childcare environment. This Level 3 Residential Childcare qualification builds learners’ knowledge and understanding of child and young person development, safeguarding, communication, risk management, positive relationships, health and wellbeing and supporting positive outcomes for children in residential childcare settings.
In addition, our Level 3 Diploma course for Residential Childcare is focused and specialised in the areas of safeguarding and child protection; supporting emotional wellbeing and resilience; promoting positive behaviour; supporting learning and development; communication and information handling; and working with children and young people who may have experienced trauma, abuse or neglect. Individuals will also learn about professional practice, working with other agencies, equality and diversity and supporting children and young people in a safe, nurturing and supportive residential childcare setting.

Completing the Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare can support learners who wish to pursue a professional career in Residential Childcare and Children and young people’s services. This qualification is suitable for learners providing care or those wishing to provide care in a residential setting and is aimed at developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to work with children and young people in care.
In addition, this qualification can support progression into employment or further training. Successful learners could go on to roles in residential childcare and social care including Residential Childcare Worker, Senior Residential Support Worker, Deputy Manager or Assistant Manager. Learners can also go on to further qualifications including the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare or other higher-level qualifications related to children and young people’s services.
Do I need a placement in an early years setting to complete this course?
Yes, for the Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare it is a requirement for learners to be in a placement or workplace setting within an actual residential childcare setting whilst studying this qualification. This is because for the learner to be considered competent in residential childcare practice, they are required to show knowledge and competence. For learners who do not already have previous experience in residential childcare, it is recommended that approximately 400 hours of learning is spent in a realistic work setting, to support the development of confidence, competence and experience. Placement or workplace experience allows learners to gain experience of applying their knowledge in real residential childcare setting to provide support for children and young people’s wellbeing, safeguarding, development, communication and daily care needs. Learners will also develop hands on experience in working with children in residential care, behaviour support and maintaining safe and nurturing care environments, as well as professional responsibilities and team working.
Assessment for the Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare is completed through a combination of written assignments, portfolio evidence and workplace observation. Learners complete assignments and portfolio work to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and competence in residential childcare practice. Practical competence is evidenced in a realistic setting of a residential childcare setting, in accordance with the Skills for Care and Development Assessment Principles.
