Level 2 Safeguarding Children Course Overview
This Level 2 safeguarding children course leads to the Focus Awards Level 2 Award in Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People (RQF), a short, Ofqual-regulated qualification for anyone aged 16 or over who works, volunteers or plans to work with children and young people. With one unit and 10 guided learning hours, it gives you a recognised grounding in what safeguarding means, why it matters and what to do if you are worried about a child.
You will learn about the different types of abuse and neglect and the signs that a child may be at risk, how to respond if a child or young person tells you something, and the safe working practices that protect children, young people and you as a practitioner. It suits teaching assistants, nursery and after-school staff, sports coaches, youth workers and volunteers. Because it is a short, knowledge-based award, it is not designated safeguarding lead (DSL) training. If you support adults rather than children, see our Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Dignity and Safeguarding in Adult Health and Social Care.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Level 2 Safeguarding Award
Safeguarding knowledge is expected in almost every role with children, so this award can strengthen applications and support your induction as a teaching assistant, nursery assistant, playworker, youth worker, sports coach or volunteer. Employers set their own requirements, though: many also ask staff to complete in-house or local safeguarding partnership training and to refresh it regularly, so check what your setting needs. The award does not replace a DBS check or your employer’s own safeguarding procedures.
To build on it, you could progress to a larger qualification that covers safeguarding alongside wider practice. If you work with children in a nursery, school, club or youth setting, the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce develops your skills in your own setting. Knowledge-based options include the Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health. Later on, Level 3 qualifications explore safeguarding in more depth.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. This is a knowledge-based qualification, so you do not need to be working with children or complete a placement. Everything is studied and assessed online. If you already work or volunteer with children, you can relate your answers to your own setting’s safeguarding policy, but this is not required.
There are no exams. You complete a short portfolio of evidence, mainly written answers, that shows you have met all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the unit. Your work is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by Focus Awards, and the award is graded Pass or Fail. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
The award is made up of one mandatory unit worth 1 credit.
Unit 01: Introduction to Safeguarding and Protecting Children or Young People
The qualification has 10 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 10 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 1–2 weeks, or sooner if they can set aside longer study sessions. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and tutor support from the date you enrol; if you need longer, you can extend your access for a re-enrolment fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is for anyone aged 16 or over who works, volunteers or wants to work with children and young people – for example in a school, nursery, after-school or holiday club, sports club, youth group or faith setting, or as a tutor. No previous safeguarding training is needed.
It may be, but check first. The ‘Level 2’ in this award refers to its level on the Regulated Qualifications Framework. Employers, schools, local safeguarding partnerships and NHS organisations often use their own training levels instead, and some require a specific course, a set number of hours or regular refreshers. Ask your employer whether a regulated Level 2 award meets their requirement before you enrol.
No. This is a short introductory award with 10 guided learning hours. Designated safeguarding leads (DSLs) and their deputies need more advanced, role-specific training – in schools in England this is set out in the statutory guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education. The award is, however, a good foundation for anyone who needs to understand safeguarding in their day-to-day role.
No. This safeguarding Level 2 award focuses on children and young people. If you work with adults, our Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Dignity and Safeguarding in Adult Health and Social Care covers adult safeguarding in depth.
Yes. You complete your Level 2 safeguarding training online through our learning platform, at times that suit you. You have unlimited tutor support throughout, optional one-to-one live sessions if you would like extra help, and the choice to pay in full or over 6 monthly payments.
You must be aged 16 or over. There are no formal entry requirements – you just need basic reading and writing skills and access to a device with an internet connection.
No. There are no fixed deadlines for individual assignments, so you can study at your own pace as long as you complete the course within your access period.
This qualification is awarded by Focus Awards, an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual. On successful completion you will receive a Focus Awards certificate.
