Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity Course Overview
The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity is an Ofqual-regulated qualification for learners who want a thorough understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion in three settings: society, the community and the workplace. With 180 hours of total qualification time across three units, it goes well beyond a short awareness session and gives you knowledge you can use in your job, your studies or voluntary work.
You begin with the foundations – what equality and diversity mean, stereotyping and labelling, prejudice, the types of discrimination and the protected characteristics. You then look at how diverse communities are, the value diversity brings, the inequality some groups face and the support services that promote equality. The workplace unit covers fair recruitment, pay, conditions and promotion, equality policies and codes of conduct, how organisations monitor equality, public sector duties and the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees. You do not need to be employed, because assignments can be based on real or researched examples. If you only need a shorter introduction, the Level 2 Award in Equality and Diversity covers the first unit on its own.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Equality and Diversity Certificate
An understanding of equality law and inclusive practice is valued in almost every sector, especially where you work with the public or support colleagues: health and social care, education, housing, customer service, HR and administration, and community and voluntary organisations. This equality and diversity qualification shows that you have studied the subject in depth, which can strengthen a job application, support a move into a supervisory role or help you contribute to your organisation’s equality policies. It is a knowledge qualification rather than a licence for a particular job, so it works best alongside experience or a role-specific qualification.
NCFE lists Level 3 qualifications in the principles of equality and diversity, or in managing equality and diversity in organisations, as the next step. You could also broaden your knowledge with related Level 2 certificates, such as Understanding Behaviour that Challenges, or move towards training others with the Level 3 Award in Education and Training.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. This is a knowledge-based qualification with no placement requirement, and you do not need to be in work. For the workplace unit you can use your current or a previous workplace as an example, or research an organisation. If the workplace you choose falls short on equality and diversity, you can suggest improvements or compare it with better practice, and that counts as evidence too.
There are no exams. You complete a portfolio of written assignments for each of the three units, which is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by NCFE. The qualification is not graded: you achieve it once you have met all of the assessment criteria. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
You complete all three mandatory units (18 credits).
Unit 01: Equality and Diversity in Society
Unit 02: Equality and Diversity in the Community
Unit 03: Equality and Diversity in the Workplace
The Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity has 180 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 180 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 2–4 months, depending on how much time they can give each week. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and unlimited tutor support; if you need more time after that, access can be extended for a re-enrolment fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Level 2 Award in Equality and Diversity is a 60-hour course made up of one unit, Equality and Diversity in Society. The Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity includes that unit and adds Equality and Diversity in the Community and Equality and Diversity in the Workplace, a total of 180 hours. If you have already achieved the award, ask us about completing the remaining two units.
The Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity suits anyone aged 16 or over who wants a solid understanding of equality and diversity: employees and supervisors, staff in health, care, education and customer service, volunteers, students and people preparing to return to work. No previous knowledge of the subject is needed.
You will look at equality in recruitment, pay, conditions and promotion, the benefits of a diverse workforce, equality policies and codes of conduct, how equality is monitored and what happens when it is not upheld, public sector duties, individual rights under equality legislation, the responsibilities of employers and employees, positive action, and the organisations that support people at work.
Yes. The whole course is online: you study the materials on our learning platform, submit assignments online and contact your tutor whenever you need support. There are no classroom sessions, and optional one-to-one live sessions are available if you want them.
It helps you recognise discrimination, respond to it appropriately and understand your own and your employer’s responsibilities. That is useful in any team, and particularly in roles involving the public, recruitment or supervising others. Many employers value it as evidence of in-depth equality and diversity training, although it does not guarantee a job or promotion.
You must be aged 16 or over. There are no formal entry qualifications; NCFE notes that a Level 1 qualification can be helpful, but it is not required. You will need basic reading and writing skills in English and a device with an internet connection.
No. There are no fixed deadlines for individual assignments, so you can study at your own pace as long as you complete the course within your 12-month access period.
This qualification is awarded by NCFE, an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual. When you complete it successfully, you will receive an NCFE certificate.
