The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) course is an Ofqual regulated qualification designed to equip learners with the essential teaching knowledge, skills and professional competencies needed for teaching roles within the Further Education (FE) and Skills sector.

The Level 5 teaching qualification will allow learners to gain an understanding of how teaching and learning is delivered in college, adult education centres, independent training providers and a vocational education setting and develop practical teaching skills needed to be an effective teacher of further education.

From 1 September 2024 the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) was replaced by the Level 5 DiT FE and Skills. This new qualification offers a clear route to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

Scope of level 5 teaching diploma

The Level 5 DiT (FE and Skills) qualification is a fully online qualification for teaching flexible learning. The course can be finished in as little as 18 months, depending on learners’ experience and how much time they can dedicate to study. The programme is delivered using our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), and includes dedicated online tutor support throughout the course.

What is the entry requirements of level 5 DiT?

To access this Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) course learners need to have Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths and relevant qualifications or experience in their specialist subject area, combined with good literacy, numeracy and digital skills. The L5 DiT online course is for learners who are already in a teaching placement or have access to an appropriate teaching or voluntary position to complete the practical element of the course.

Yes. The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching FE and Skills requires you to have access to a genuine teaching placement within a Further Education and Skills setting. This is a mandatory requirement, as the qualification is based on real teaching practice and professional experience.

There are 10 formal teaching observations which are mandatory for all learners studying towards the Level 5 Teaching Diploma within a real Further Education teaching environment. In most observations, learners should teach a group of 10 or more learners. Each observation should be for at least 45 minutes and should aim to provide evidence of the trainee’s achievement of the occupational teaching standards. Early observations are mainly developmental and are used to provide feedback to enhance teaching practice and later observations are primarily formal assessment of competence.

Observations can be done by a provider tutor, subject specialist or placement mentor. A maximum of two observations can be made by live remote delivery and one more observation can be made remotely when appropriate feedback arrangements are in place. Reports of observations are a part of the learner’s portfolio and form part of the final professional discussion assessment.

Learners will also need to gain access to a suitable teaching placement in the Further Education sector. The qualification will be achieved through the completion of a minimum placement of 250 hours plus 150 hours of teaching practice with teaching delivered both face-to-face and through live remote delivery.
