Level 2 Award in Equality and Diversity Course Overview
The NCFE Level 2 Award in Equality and Diversity is a short, Ofqual-regulated qualification that introduces the ideas behind treating people fairly – at work, in education and in everyday life. It is built around one unit, Equality and Diversity in Society, so it gives you a focused grounding for a new job, a staff induction, volunteering or your own interest without committing to a longer course.
You will explore what equality and diversity really mean, how stereotyping and labelling affect people, and the difference between prejudice and discrimination, including direct and indirect discrimination, discrimination by association and positive action. You will also look at the protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010 and the many ways people describe their own identity. Everything is studied online and assessed through written assignments, with no placement and no exams. If you want to go further, the Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity includes this same unit plus two more on the community and the workplace, so the award is a natural first step towards it.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Equality and Diversity Award
Employers in every sector expect staff to understand equality and to treat colleagues, customers and service users fairly, so this award is useful in almost any workplace – particularly customer-facing roles and work in care, education, retail, hospitality, housing and the voluntary sector. It gives you recognised evidence of equality and diversity training that you can add to your CV or use to support an application or induction. On its own it is an awareness qualification: it does not lead directly to a specific job or make you an equality, diversity and inclusion specialist.
The most direct progression is the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity. Because the award’s unit is also the first unit of the certificate, you may be able to carry your credit across and complete just the community and workplace units. You could also add role-related knowledge with the Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities, or look at Level 3 equality and diversity qualifications in the longer term.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. The Level 2 Award in Equality and Diversity is knowledge-based, so you do not need a placement and you do not need to be in work. Your assignments ask you to apply what you learn to real-life situations, and you can draw examples from your own experience, your community or the news.
There are no exams. You complete a portfolio of written assignments covering every learning outcome in the unit, which is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by NCFE. The qualification is not graded: you achieve it once you have met all of the assessment criteria. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
The award is made up of one mandatory unit (6 credits).
Unit 01: Equality and Diversity in Society
In this unit you will:
- understand what equality is
- understand what diversity is
- understand the effects of stereotyping and labelling
- understand the effects of prejudice and discrimination
- understand the ways people describe themselves
The Level 2 Award in Equality and Diversity has 60 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 60 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 4–8 weeks, or sooner if you can study for several hours each week. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and unlimited tutor support; if you need more time after that, access can be extended for a re-enrolment fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
Both are NCFE qualifications at Level 2. The award is the shorter option: one unit, Equality and Diversity in Society, with a total qualification time of 60 hours. The Level 2 Certificate in Equality and Diversity includes that unit plus Equality and Diversity in the Community and Equality and Diversity in the Workplace, a total of 180 hours. Choose the award for a focused introduction, or the certificate if you want in-depth knowledge, particularly of workplace policies and individual rights.
It is for anyone aged 16 or over who wants a recognised introduction to equality and diversity – new starters completing an induction, volunteers, students, people returning to work and anyone who deals with the public. No previous knowledge is needed.
You will learn what equality and diversity mean, how stereotyping and labelling affect individuals, the difference between prejudice and discrimination, the main types of discrimination, the protected characteristics, and how people’s multiple identities shape the way they describe themselves.
This award is a flexible way to complete equality and diversity training online, and many employers accept a regulated qualification as evidence of that training. It goes further than a short e-learning module because your work is assessed. Requirements vary between organisations, so check with your employer or the organisation you are applying to.
Yes. You study through our online learning platform at times that suit you, submit your assignments online and contact your tutor whenever you need help. Optional one-to-one live sessions are available if you would like to talk things through.
You must be aged 16 or over. There are no formal entry qualifications; NCFE notes that a Level 1 qualification can be helpful, but it is not required. You will need basic reading and writing skills in English and a device with an internet connection.
No. There are no fixed deadlines for individual assignments, so you can study at your own pace as long as you complete the course within your 12-month access period.
