Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities (RQF)

Why Study with us?

Employment Rights and Responsibilities Level 2 Course Overview

Our employment rights and responsibilities Level 2 course leads to the Focus Awards Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities (RQF), a short Ofqual-regulated qualification that explains what you are entitled to at work and what your employer can reasonably expect from you. It is designed for people starting their first job or apprenticeship, returning to work, or simply wanting to understand the rules that shape their working life.

You will look at the main rights and responsibilities of employees and employers, the employment documents you are likely to receive – starting with your contract of employment – and the key procedures organisations use, such as grievance and disciplinary procedures. You will also consider where to find reliable information and advice if a problem arises at work. This award applies to any sector. If you work in care or with children, the Level 2 Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Health, Social Care, Children and Young People’s Settings covers similar principles in a care context.

Career Opportunities and Progression after the Level 2 ERR Award

Understanding your employment rights and responsibilities helps you start a new job with confidence, recognise when something is not right and deal with workplace issues in the proper way. ERR used to be a required part of apprenticeship frameworks in England. Today’s apprenticeship standards no longer require a separate ERR qualification, but the award is still a recognised way to show an employer that you understand your obligations. It is a knowledge qualification, so it does not lead to a particular job on its own.

From here you could choose a sector-specific route. If you work, or plan to work, in health, social care or children’s services, the Level 2 Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Health, Social Care, Children and Young People’s Settings applies these principles to care settings and sits well alongside qualifications such as our Level 2 Diploma in Care. Our Level 2 Award in Employability Skills is another useful next step if you are preparing for interviews.

Do I need a work placement to complete this course?

No. The award is knowledge-based, so you do not need to be employed or on a placement. If you are working, you may find it useful to look at your own contract and workplace policies as you study, but this is not required.

Frequently Asked Questions

ERR stands for Employment Rights and Responsibilities. An ERR qualification shows that you understand the rights and duties of employees and employers, the documents that set out your terms of employment and the procedures organisations follow. This award is a general ERR qualification that applies to any type of workplace.

It is for anyone aged 16 or over who is starting work, beginning an apprenticeship, returning to work or changing career, as well as people already in work who want to understand their position better. No previous qualifications or work experience are needed.

You will learn about the rights and responsibilities of employees and employers, the purpose of your contract of employment and other employment documents, the procedures organisations use to deal with issues at work, and where to go for information and advice about employment matters.

This award covers employment rights and responsibilities for any sector. The Level 2 Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Health, Social Care, Children and Young People’s Settings is a separate qualification for people working, or planning to work, in care and children’s services. It is slightly longer, with 24 guided learning hours compared with 15, and applies employment law, procedures and personal development to those settings. Choose the version that matches the sector you work in.

Most learners complete the award in 1–3 weeks. You have 12 months’ access from enrolment, so there is no pressure to finish quickly, and you can extend your access for a re-enrolment fee if you need to.

You must be aged 16 or over. There are no formal entry requirements – you just need basic reading and writing skills and access to a device with an internet connection.

No. There are no fixed deadlines for individual assignments, so you can study at your own pace as long as you complete the course within your access period.

This qualification is awarded by Focus Awards, an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual. On successful completion you will receive a Focus Awards certificate.
