Level 2 Award in Mentoring Course Overview
The NCFE Level 2 Award in Mentoring is an Ofqual-regulated qualification for anyone who supports, guides or encourages other people – at work, in education, in a community group or as a volunteer. It explains what a mentor does, the different types and uses of mentoring and the benefits for mentor and mentee, then helps you build the skills to run a structured, productive mentoring meeting of your own.
You will learn how formal and informal mentoring agreements work, how goals are set and how a mentoring relationship comes to an end, as well as the support and guidance mentors themselves need. You will develop the core skills – communication, active listening, different types of question, giving feedback using recognised models, problem-solving and role modelling – and consider the legal and ethical side, including boundaries, trust and respect, barriers, health and safety and personal safety. In the final unit you plan and lead a mentoring meeting with a real mentee, agree SMART actions and reflect on your performance using feedback from your mentee and your assessor. To strengthen your listening skills further, the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills is a good companion course.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Mentoring Award
Mentoring skills are used in many roles: peer mentors and buddies in schools, colleges and universities; workplace mentors who support apprentices and new starters; team leaders and supervisors; youth and community workers; and volunteers with charities that run mentoring schemes. This mentoring qualification gives you recognised evidence of those skills, which can strengthen an application for a mentoring role or show your employer that you are ready to support colleagues. It does not guarantee a job, and roles that involve mentoring children or vulnerable adults will also require a DBS check and the organisation’s own training.
NCFE suggests progressing to a Level 3 qualification in mentoring or coaching. If you enjoy the helping side of mentoring, you could move on to the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Information, Advice or Guidance or our Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, and if you would like to train or teach others, the Level 3 Award in Education and Training is another option.
Do I need a work placement or a mentee to complete this course?
You do not need a work placement, but you do need someone to mentor. Unit 03 asks you to prepare for and lead a mentoring meeting that is observed by your assessor. Your mentee could be a colleague, an apprentice, a student, a volunteer or someone you support in the community, as long as they have a genuine goal to work on and agree to take part. Because you study this mentoring course online, the meeting can be observed live over a video call or recorded on video or audio for your assessor to review. If your mentee is under 18, you will need permission from their parent or carer, or from their school or organisation, before the meeting is recorded.
There are no exams. Units 01 and 02 are assessed through written assignments, including a personal development plan. For Unit 03 you prepare the paperwork for a mentoring meeting (an action plan, feedback forms and a draft mentoring agreement), lead the observed meeting, and then write a reflective account using feedback from your mentee and your assessor. Your portfolio is internally assessed and externally quality assured by NCFE, and the award is not graded. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
You complete all three mandatory units (6 credits).
Unit 01: Role of a Mentor
Unit 02: Preparing for the Role of a Mentor
Unit 03: Demonstrating Mentoring Skills and Techniques
The Level 2 Award in Mentoring has 60 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 60 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 4–8 weeks; allow time to arrange your observed mentoring meeting with your mentee. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and unlimited tutor support; if you need more time after that, access can be extended for a re-enrolment fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Level 2 Award in Mentoring is for anyone aged 16 or over who mentors, or would like to: workplace mentors and buddies, team leaders, teaching assistants and peer mentors in education, youth and community workers, and volunteers on mentoring schemes. It suits complete beginners as well as people who already mentor informally and want a recognised qualification.
You will learn the role and benefits of mentoring, how mentoring agreements are set up and ended, and how mentors are supported. You will develop communication, listening, questioning and feedback skills, understand boundaries and the legal and ethical side of mentoring, and plan, lead and reflect on a real mentoring meeting.
When you reach Unit 03, you agree a time and place with your mentee and prepare an action plan, feedback forms and a draft mentoring agreement. The meeting can take place in person or online. Your assessor either observes it live over a video call or reviews a video or audio recording, with your mentee’s consent. Afterwards you collect feedback from your mentee and assessor and write a short reflection with a personal development plan.
No. Coaching and mentoring overlap, but this award focuses on mentoring – a supportive relationship in which you help a mentee set and work towards their own goals. It is a Level 2 introduction rather than a professional coaching qualification. If you want to specialise later, NCFE suggests progressing to a Level 3 mentoring or coaching qualification.
It can strengthen your CV and show employers that you have practical, assessed mentoring skills, which is useful in education, youth work, the voluntary sector and workplace roles that involve supporting others. It is not a licence to practise and does not guarantee employment, but it is a good foundation for further training.
You must be aged 16 or over. No previous qualifications or mentoring experience are needed, although NCFE notes that a Level 1 qualification can be helpful. You will need a device with an internet connection and, for Unit 03, a mentee who is willing to take part in an observed meeting.
No. There are no fixed deadlines for individual assignments, so you can study at your own pace as long as you complete the course within your 12-month access period.
This qualification is awarded by NCFE, an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual. When you complete it successfully, you will receive an NCFE certificate.
