ERR Health and Social Care Award Course Overview
This ERR health and social care award – the Focus Awards Level 2 Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Health, Social Care, Children and Young People’s Settings (RQF) – helps you understand your rights and duties as an employee, and your employer’s, in care and children’s services. It is for anyone aged 16 or over who already works in, or is preparing to join, adult care, healthcare support, early years, schools or other children and young people’s settings.
You will look at the areas of employment covered by law and where to find reliable advice, the terms of a contract of employment, what a pay statement shows and how to raise a grievance. The unit then puts your job in context: how your role contributes to the service, how it links to the wider sector, the part played by representative bodies, the career pathways open to you and how issues of public concern can change the way services are delivered. Every topic is set in health, social care and children’s settings; if you work in another industry, our Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities may suit you better.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the ERR Award
An ERR health and social care qualification helps you settle into a new role, follow agreed ways of working and plan your next steps with confidence. It is relevant to care assistants, support workers, healthcare assistants, nursery and early years staff, teaching assistants and anyone starting out in these settings, and it can strengthen job applications and supervision or appraisal discussions. It does not, on its own, qualify you for a particular role, and employers set their own recruitment requirements.
Because the unit asks you to explore career pathways, it is a good time to plan your next qualification. In adult care, the Level 2 Diploma in Care, or the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care once you take on more responsibility, are natural next steps. If you work with children, consider the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce. These qualifications assess your practice, so you will need to be working or on placement in a suitable setting.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. This is a knowledge-based qualification, so a work placement is not required. Some assessment criteria ask about your own contract, pay statement and job role, so the award is especially useful if you already work in the sector. If you are not employed yet, your tutor will advise you on how to approach these tasks.
There are no exams. You complete a portfolio of evidence, mainly written answers, showing that you have met all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the unit. Your work is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by Focus Awards, and the award is graded Pass or Fail. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
The award is made up of one mandatory unit worth 3 credits.
Unit 01: Understand Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Health, Social Care or Children and Young People’s Settings
The qualification has 24 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 30 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 2–3 weeks, depending on how much time they can give each week. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and tutor support from the date you enrol; if you need longer, you can extend your access for a re-enrolment fee.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is for anyone aged 16 or over who works in, or plans to work in, health, social care or a children and young people’s setting – for example care and support workers, healthcare assistants, nursery practitioners and teaching assistants. It is especially useful for new starters and people returning to work who want to understand their employment responsibilities and rights in health and social care or children’s services.
ERR stands for employment responsibilities and rights (often called employment rights and responsibilities). It covers what the law and your contract say about your rights as an employee, the responsibilities you and your employer have to each other, and how your job fits within the wider sector.
You will learn which aspects of employment are covered by law and why, where to find information and advice, what your contract of employment and pay statement contain, how grievance procedures work and which personal details you must keep up to date with your employer. You will also explore how your role fits the wider care sector, representative bodies, career pathways and issues of public concern.
Both cover employment rights, contracts and workplace procedures. This award is written specifically for health, social care and children and young people’s settings, and its unit sets every topic – including career pathways and issues of public concern – in the context of care and children’s services. If you work in another industry, the Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities is likely to be the better fit.
