Level 2 Award in Babysitting Course Overview
The NCFE CACHE Level 2 Award in Babysitting is a short, Ofqual-regulated qualification for anyone aged 14 or over who looks after other people’s children in their home – whether you babysit for neighbours and family friends, care for younger relatives, or want a recognised babysitting qualification to reassure the parents you work for. It covers your responsibilities to the children in your care and to their parents, and how to keep children safe while you are in charge.
You will learn how to assess risks in a family home and prevent accidents and fires, how to choose age-appropriate toys and activities for children from birth to five, how to settle a young child for sleep, and how to run safe, creative craft activities. The course is knowledge-based, so there is no placement and you study everything online. It pairs well with our Level 2 Award in Preparation for the Responsibilities of Parenting if you want a fuller picture of caring for babies and young children.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Babysitting Award
This babysitting course gives you knowledge, and a certificate you can show to parents, which can help you find babysitting work and feel more confident when you are in charge. It does not license you to practise as a nanny or childminder, and it does not qualify you to work in a nursery: those roles need further qualifications, and childminders in England must also register with Ofsted or a childminder agency. Paediatric first aid is not included, so we recommend taking a separate paediatric first aid course as well.
If you enjoy caring for children, the award is a good first step towards a career in childcare. From the age of 16 you could progress to our Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner, which leads to Level 2 roles in nurseries and pre-schools, or to the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce. You might also consider the Level 2 Award in Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. This is a knowledge-based qualification, so you do not need to be babysitting, working with children or completing a placement to achieve it. You study and complete your assignments online, and you do not need access to children to complete them.
There are no exams. You complete a short portfolio of assignments, which is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by NCFE. Tasks may include written answers, a risk assessment of a home environment and activity ideas for young children. The qualification is graded Achieved or Not Yet Achieved. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
You complete two mandatory units and one optional unit.
Unit 01: Accident Prevention and Fire Safety When Babysitting
Unit 02: Caring for Young Children in a Babysitting Environment
Unit 03: Craft Activities with Young Children (optional unit)
The qualification has 43 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 60 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 4–8 weeks. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and tutor support, so there is plenty of time to fit study around school, college or work; after that, access can be extended for a re-enrolment fee.
Qualification Number: 600/0420/4

Frequently Asked Questions
It is for anyone aged 14 or over who babysits, or would like to: teenagers, students, grandparents and other family members who regularly look after children, and adults who want a recognised qualification to show parents. No previous childcare experience is needed.
You will learn how to assess and reduce risks in a home, how to prevent accidents and fires, your responsibilities to the children in your care and to their parents, which toys and activities suit children from birth to five, how to prepare a young child for sleep, and how to plan safe craft activities.
There is no legal minimum age for babysitting in England and Wales, but the NSPCC recommends that babysitters are at least 16. If a babysitter is under 16, the parents remain legally responsible for their children’s welfare. You can start this qualification from age 14, which makes it a good way to prepare before you begin babysitting on your own.
No. The award covers accident prevention and fire safety, but it is not a first aid qualification. We recommend that babysitters also complete a paediatric first aid course so they know how to respond if a child is injured or becomes unwell.
No. The Level 2 Award in Babysitting does not confer occupational competence or a licence to practise, so it does not qualify you for roles in nurseries or as a nanny or childminder. It is a useful first step, and from age 16 you could progress to a Level 2 early years qualification that leads to practitioner roles.
You must be aged 14 or over. There are no formal academic entry requirements – you just need basic reading and writing skills and access to a device with an internet connection.
No. There are no fixed deadlines for individual assignments, so you can study at your own pace as long as you complete the course within your access period.
This qualification is awarded by NCFE, an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual, under its CACHE brand for childcare and early years qualifications. On successful completion you will receive an NCFE CACHE certificate.
