Level 1 Certificate in Employability Skills Course Overview
The NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Employability Skills is an Ofqual-regulated qualification for people who are getting ready to start work, coming back after a break, or looking for their first job after school or college. It begins with your mindset – how the way you think about challenges and setbacks shapes your progress – and then builds the everyday knowledge employers look for, such as understanding customers, staying motivated and knowing how a business works.
You will also look at the situations people often find hardest when they are new to a job: speaking up assertively, working more independently, coping with change, handling conflict and getting through your first few days. A unit on health and well-being helps you look after yourself at work, and a unit on disclosing an offence helps anyone with a past conviction understand when and how to raise it with an employer. The course is knowledge-based, so you can complete it entirely online without being in work. When you are ready to go further, our Level 2 Award in Employability Skills focuses on interviews, self-assessment and teamwork.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Level 1 Certificate
This certificate is a first step into work rather than a job qualification in its own right. It shows employers that you understand what is expected in the workplace and have thought about how you behave, communicate and solve problems, which can help with applications and interviews for entry-level roles in areas such as retail, hospitality, customer service, warehousing and administration. It is also a useful addition if you are already working and want formal recognition of the workplace skills you have built up.
Many learners move on to a Level 2 employability qualification. Our Level 2 Award in Employability Skills concentrates on interview preparation, self-assessment and teamwork, while the Level 2 Award in Workskills develops self-management and the ability to give and receive feedback. If you want to understand your position as an employee, the Level 2 Award in Employment Rights and Responsibilities is a short next step. You could also go on to vocational training in a sector that interests you, such as care, early years or business.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. This is a knowledge-based qualification, so you do not need to be employed, volunteering or on a placement. Where a unit asks you to show a skill, the activity can be simulated or based on examples from your studies, everyday life or previous work, and you complete everything online.
There are no exams. You build a portfolio of evidence – written assignments, workbook tasks and short reflective activities – which is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by NCFE. The certificate is not graded: you achieve it once you have met all the assessment criteria for your units. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
You complete the mandatory unit, Understanding Mindset, plus a set of optional units chosen to prepare you for the workplace.
Unit 01: Understanding Mindset (mandatory)
Unit 02: Understanding Your Customers
Unit 03: Understanding Motivation
Unit 04: Business and Customer Awareness
Unit 05: Developing Assertiveness
Unit 06: Introduction to Independence
Unit 07: Coping with Change
Unit 08: Understanding Conflict at Work
Unit 09: Health and Well-being in the Workplace
Unit 10: Disclosing an Offence
Unit 11: Dealing with Your First Days at Work
The certificate has 90 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 150 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 3–4 months. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and tutor support from the date you enrol; if you need more time, you can extend your access for a re-enrolment fee.

The Level 1 Certificate in Employability Skills is a broad introduction to the workplace, with a total qualification time of 150 hours. The Level 2 Award in Employability Skills is shorter (90 hours) but set at a higher level and focused on getting a job: preparing for and taking part in interviews, assessing your own strengths, being effective at work and teamwork. Choose Level 1 if you are new to work or want to build your confidence first, and Level 2 if you feel ready to start applying for jobs.
No qualification can promise employment, but this certificate gives you knowledge and confidence that help when you apply for work and start a new role. It also gives employers evidence that you have prepared for the workplace and understand what they expect.
You must be aged 14 or over. There are no formal entry requirements, although NCFE notes that learners may find it helpful to have achieved an Entry Level 3 qualification. You will need basic reading and writing skills and access to a device with an internet connection.
No. There are no fixed deadlines for individual assignments, so you can study at your own pace as long as you complete the course within your access period.
