Level 2 Award in Preparation for the Responsibilities of Parenting Course Overview
The NCFE CACHE Level 2 Award in Preparation for the Responsibilities of Parenting is a short, Ofqual-regulated qualification that helps you understand what caring for a baby and young child really involves. It explores the rights and responsibilities of parents, how family lifestyle choices affect children’s health and development, and the practical side of looking after a young baby – from recognising when a baby is unwell to finding support as a new parent.
The course is open to anyone aged 14 or over and suits expectant and new parents, young people learning about family life, grandparents and relatives who help raise children, and anyone thinking about a future in childcare or family support. It is knowledge-based, so you study entirely online with no placement, and each unit is short and practical, so you can apply what you learn to everyday family life straight away. If you also look after other people’s children, our Level 2 Award in Babysitting makes a natural companion course.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Parenting Award
This parenting qualification is designed to build knowledge and confidence rather than to lead directly to a job. It can support your own family life, strengthen applications for college courses, volunteering or apprenticeships, and show your interest in working with children and families, for example in childcare or family support. It does not, on its own, qualify you to work in a registered childcare setting.
If you would like to take your learning further, you could progress to our Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner from age 16, or to the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce if you work or volunteer with children. In the longer term, Level 3 qualifications such as the Level 3 Diploma for Working in the Early Years Sector (Early Years Educator) lead to qualified practitioner roles.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. This is a knowledge-based qualification, so you do not need to be a parent, work with children or complete a placement. You study and complete your assignments entirely online.
There are no exams. You complete a short portfolio of assignments, which is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by NCFE. The qualification is graded Achieved or Not Yet Achieved. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
You complete two mandatory units and one optional unit.
Unit 01: Rights and Responsibilities in Relation to Parenting
Unit 02: Parenting and Healthy Lifestyles
Unit 03: Parenting a Young Baby (optional unit)
The qualification has 50 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 60 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 4–8 weeks. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and tutor support, so you can fit study around family life, school or work; after that, access can be extended for a re-enrolment fee.
Qualification Number: 600/0421/6
NCFE is an Awarding Organisation regulated by Ofqual, ensuring that all qualifications adhere to rigorous standards.
