Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems Course Overview
The NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems is an Ofqual-regulated qualification for anyone aged 16 or over who wants to understand mental health and the problems that can lead to mental ill health. It suits people who work, or hope to work, in health and social care, education, housing, community or customer-facing roles, as well as parents, carers and anyone who wants to be better informed in their personal life. You do not need any previous qualifications or experience.
The first unit looks at what mental health and mental ill health mean, how mental ill health can affect a person’s life, and the legal frameworks that shape care and support. You then study 12 specific conditions in turn: stress, anxiety, phobias, depression, post-natal depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, dementia, eating disorders, ADHD, OCD and post-traumatic stress disorder. For each one you learn about possible causes, how it can affect the person and those around them, and how it can be treated and managed. This is an awareness qualification rather than a clinical one, so it does not qualify you to diagnose or treat anyone. If your work is mainly with under-18s, our Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health may suit you better.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Mental Health Awareness Course
Mental health awareness is useful in almost any role that involves supporting people or working with the public. The Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems is particularly relevant if you work, or want to work, in adult social care, healthcare support, education, housing and community services or the voluntary sector, and it adds recognised continuing professional development to your CV. It is a knowledge qualification, so on its own it will not qualify you for a clinical or counselling role, but it can help you understand the people you support and respond with more confidence and empathy.
Many learners use it as a stepping stone. If you would like to develop the skills to listen to and support others, you could move on to our Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and later the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills. If you work in care, the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care develops your practical competence, while the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges and the Level 2 Award in Awareness of End of Life Care add related specialist knowledge.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. This is a knowledge-only qualification, so you do not need to be working in a health, care or support setting or to complete a placement. You study and complete all of your assignments online, and you can draw on everyday life or your current job for examples where it helps.
There are no exams. For each unit you complete written assignments that build into a portfolio of evidence, which is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by NCFE. You need to achieve all 13 units, and the qualification is graded Achieved or Not Yet Achieved. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track, and your tutor gives you feedback on each one.
You complete all 13 mandatory units.
