Understanding Behaviour that Challenges Level 2 Course Overview
Our Understanding Behaviour that Challenges Level 2 course leads to the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Behaviour that Challenges, an Ofqual-regulated qualification for anyone aged 16 or over. It is designed for people who work, or want to work, in health and social care, education or childcare – such as care and support workers, healthcare assistants, teaching assistants, early years staff and residential childcare workers – and for family carers who want to respond to behaviour that challenges with more confidence.
The course treats behaviour as a form of communication. You learn what behaviour that challenges is, its possible causes, including unmet needs, and its impact on the person and the people around them. You then explore how to recognise when behaviour may escalate, proactive and reactive strategies, behaviour support plans, and the laws that protect people’s rights, including the least restrictive approach. You also study communication and de-escalation techniques, how to record incidents (for example with ABC charts), when to involve other professionals, and the value of debriefing, reflection and support for everyone after an incident. It is knowledge-based, so no placement is needed. If you support autistic people, our Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism complements it well.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the Challenging Behaviour Course
An understanding of behaviour that challenges is valuable in many roles, including care and support worker, healthcare assistant, residential childcare worker, teaching assistant and early years practitioner. The certificate can strengthen your CV if you are applying for these roles, and it is recognised continuing professional development if you already work in one. It is a knowledge qualification and does not include physical intervention or restraint, so your employer may also ask you to complete its own approved training.
For further learning, the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism and the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health build closely related knowledge. If you work in adult care, you could progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, or to the Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (England) if you work with children and young people in a residential setting.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. The Understanding Behaviour that Challenges Level 2 course leads to a knowledge-only qualification, so you do not need to be working in a care, education or childcare setting, or to complete a placement. You study and complete your assignments online. If you already work or volunteer in a relevant setting, you can relate what you learn to your own experience, but this is not required.
There are no exams. For each of the four units you complete written assignments or tasks, which build a portfolio of evidence that is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by NCFE. You need to achieve all four units, and the qualification is graded Achieved or Not Yet Achieved. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
You complete all four mandatory units.
Unit 01: Understand Behaviour that Challenges
Unit 02: Understand How to Support Positive Behaviour
Unit 03: Understand the Importance of Effective Communication and the Management of Behaviour that Challenges
Unit 04: Understand the Role of Reflection and Support for Those Involved in Incidents of Behaviour that Challenges
The qualification has 130 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 153 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete it in 3–4 months. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and unlimited tutor support from the date you enrol; if you need longer, you can extend your access for a re-enrolment fee.
