Children and Young People's Mental Health Course Overview
This children and young people’s mental health course leads to the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health, an Ofqual-regulated qualification for anyone aged 16 or over. It focuses on children and young people aged 5 to 18, so it suits teaching assistants and school staff, youth and sports workers, residential childcare workers, foster carers, health and social care staff, and parents and carers who want to understand and support the young people in their lives.
Across five mandatory units you learn what mental health, wellbeing and resilience mean, how common mental health problems are among young people, and how stigma, the media and the law – including consent, data protection and safeguarding – shape the picture. You explore risk and protective factors such as puberty, identity, body image, bullying and abuse, then how to recognise concerns including stress, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, harmful coping behaviours and mental health crises. You also look at the impact on family life and education, and at person-centred support, early intervention and the services and professionals involved. If you want to learn about mental health across all ages, including adults, our Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems covers 13 conditions in depth.
Career Opportunities and Progression after the CYP Mental Health Course
Awareness of children and young people’s mental health is valuable in schools and colleges, early years settings, youth and community work, sport and leisure, residential childcare, fostering, and health and social care services for young people. The certificate can strengthen an application for roles such as teaching assistant, learning mentor, youth support worker or residential childcare worker, and it is recognised professional development if you already work with young people. It is a knowledge qualification, so it does not qualify you to diagnose, provide therapy or work as a mental health practitioner.
To progress, you could take our Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools if you work in education, or the Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (England) if you work in a children’s home. The Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills develops listening and helping skills, and learners aged 19 or over can explore the impact of early trauma with the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences.
Do I need a work placement to complete this course?
No. This is a knowledge-only qualification, so you do not need to be working with children or young people, or to complete a work placement. You study and complete all of your assignments online, and if you do work with young people you can relate what you learn to your own role.
There are no exams. You complete written assignments for each of the five units, building a portfolio of evidence that is internally assessed by your tutor and externally quality assured by NCFE. You need to achieve all five units, and the qualification is graded Achieved or Not Yet Achieved. Assignments are marked within 3–5 working days, or 1–3 working days on Priority Track.
You complete all five mandatory units.
Unit 01: Understand Children and Young People’s Mental Health in Context
Unit 02: Understand Factors which may Affect Children and Young People’s Mental Health
Unit 03: Understand Children and Young People’s Mental Health Concerns
Unit 04: Understand the Impact of Children and Young People’s Mental Health Concerns
Unit 05: Understand How to Support Children and Young People with Mental Health Concerns
The qualification has 135 guided learning hours (GLH) and a total qualification time (TQT) of 156 hours. Study is self-paced, and most learners complete the children and young people’s mental health course in 3–4 months. Your enrolment includes 12 months’ access to the learning platform and unlimited tutor support from the date you enrol; if you need longer, you can extend your access for a re-enrolment fee.
